Housing Choice Vouchers

The housing choice voucher program is the federal government's major program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. This program is for monthly rental assistance payments only.

Sunrise Apartments

The Sunrise Apartments are 30 unit duplexes for Public Housing low income families. The offices for the Housing Choice Voucher program are located here as well. Please refer to the Public Housing waiting list to see if applications are being accepted at this time.

Applying for Assistance

Families wishing to apply for the Public Housing Program or the Housing Choice Voucher Program will be required to complete an application for housing assistance. Applications are taken to compile a waiting list. Due to demand for housing in the Hays Housing Authority's jurisdiction, the Housing Authority may take applications on an open enrollment basis.

Housing assistance is limited to low-income families and individuals The Housing Authority determines your eligibility based on annual gross income, whether you qualify as elderly, a person with a disability, and U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status. Housing Authorities use income limits developed by HUD. The Hays Housing Authority can provide you with the income levels for the city of Hays, Kansas and family size eligibility.

The Hays Housing Authority (HHA) is responsible for the management and operation of the local public housing program, Sunrise Apartments. On-going functions for the HHA are to assure compliance with leases. Set other charges such as security deposit, damages to the unit, late charges, and more. The HHA performs periodic reexaminations of the family's income at least once every 12 months. Transfers families from one unit to another, in order to correct over/under crowding, or repair or renovate a dwelling. Terminates leases when necessary, and maintains the development in a decent, safe, and sanitary condition.
